exhibition opening : 15.10.2008 – duration : 3.5 months
“Whereas in one Parisian architect’s studio shots are fired at a clay block, in another orchids are raised. In Zurich an architect reclined in her bed with a wooden set-square, in Hong Kong thoughts are crystallised with pieces of Lego. This exhibition tells about the very different ways in which architects use their various tools, from the pencil to the computer.” Az W
Elke Krasny did research in 20 offices over a period of more than two years:
Alvar Aalto / Lina Bo Bardi / Atelier Bow-Wow / Hermann Czech / Diller Scofidio + Renfro / Edge Design Institute / Yona Friedman / Antoni Gaudí / The Jerde Partnership / Lux Guyer / Steven Holl Architects / Lacaton & Vassal / Rudolf Olgiati / Charlotte Perriand / R&Sie(n) / Schwalm-Theiss & Bresich / Karl Schwanzer / SOM – Skidmore, Owings & Merrill / UNStudio / Venturi Scott Brown & Associates.
For each architect I created a unique setting, that interpreted her / his way of making architecture, inspired by the documentary photos and research results of Elke Krasny. Each set had to fulfill up to 3 tasks: It had to be made of 3-dimensional structures / objects which talk about the atmosphere in an office (through material and form), it had to be a display (for the documentary photos and a project in design phase), it sometimes had to be a showcase (to carefully protect original objects).
The sceneries were loosely scattered around the centre of the room, where objects in showcases – or placed on ordinary office tables – illustrate the history of tools in architecture (from the pencil via the rapidograph to the plotter – from the sculpting knife to 3D molding cutters).
